The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 And a Scripture inscribed 2 on wide-open scrolls. 3 by the House inhabited 4 and by the lofty vault of the sky, 5 And by the Ocean filled with Swell;- 6 surely thy Lord's chastisement is about to fall; 7 There shall be none to avert it; 8 (It shall come to pass) on the Day when the heaven will convulse in a great convulsion, 9 The mountains move and fly away, 10 Then woe that Day to those that treat (Truth) as Falsehood;- 11 Who are playing in falsehood. 12 the day when they shall be pitched into the fire of Gehenna: 13 This is the fire which you used to deny. 14 Was it, then, a delusion or is it that you failed to see [its truth]? 15 Roast in it. Bear it with patience or impatience, it will be the same for you. You will be requited for what you had done." 16 The pious will live in bountiful Paradise, 17 Happy because of what their Lord hath given them, and (because) their Lord hath warded off from them the torment of hell-fire. 18 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working. 19 They will recline (with ease) on Thrones (of dignity) arranged in ranks; and We shall join them to Companions, with beautiful big and lustrous eyes. 20 And those who believe and whose progeny follow them in belief. We shall cause their progeny to join them, and We shall not diminish unto them aught of their own work. Every man is for that which he hath earned a pledge. 21 We shall provide them in abundance with such fruit and meat as they desire. 22 There they shall pass from hand to hand a (wine) cup, free from any Laghw (dirty, false, evil vague talk between them), and free from sin (because it will be legal for them to drink). 23 ۞ And there go round, waiting on them menservants of their own, as they were hidden pearls. 24 And they [who are thus blest] will turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]. 25 They will say: "Behold, aforetime - when we were [still living] in the midst of our kith and kin - we were full of fear [at the thought of God's displeasure]: 26 but Allah has been gracious to us and has protected us from the punishment of the burning wind. 27 Surely we called upon Him before: Surely He is the Benign, the Merciful. 28
