The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the declining star, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
