The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful

Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So, let him call upon his way! 17 We will now call the guards! 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
