The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
