[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
