The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
