a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
