The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
