We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 But why have not bracelets of gold been put upon him, or why have there not come with him angels as companions? 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
