The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
