The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night, when it envelops, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
