The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Burning the skins! 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
