He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and in awe of God 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And olives and palms 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
