The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
