The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your garments purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
