The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 The One Who taught man all what he did not know. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
