a good many of olden times, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
