The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
