He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him you attend; 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 and his consort and his children; 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
