The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
