The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 And he is going to be satisfied. 21
