A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike. 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
