The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 in which you are now living 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
