The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon as she follows in his wake, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
