Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and favoring him, he says: 'My Lord, has honored me' 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
