The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
