A throng of the ancients 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
