The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And affirms goodness, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
