Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
