He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And he fears, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and herbage 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 wife and sons, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
