The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
