And indeed We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Travel by night with Ibadi (My slaves) and strike a dry path for them in the sea, fearing neither to be overtaken [by Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] nor being afraid (of drowning in the sea)." 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his hosts, but they were fully overwhelmed by the sea. 78 And Pharaoh led his folk astray, he did not guide them. 79 O children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mount, and sent down for you manna and quails, 80 I allowed you to consume the pure sustenance which We had given you but not to become rebels, lest you become subject to My wrath. Whoever becomes subject to My wrath will certainly be destroyed. 81 but to whosoever repents, believes and does good deeds, and is at last guided, I am Forgiving' 82 ۞ "But, O Moses, what has made you come in haste from your people?" 83 He said, "They are following in my footsteps, while I have hastened to You, my Lord, to please You." 84 (Allah) said: "Verily! We have tried your people in your absence, and As-Samiri has led them astray." 85 Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: "O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Did then the promise seem to you long in coming? Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?" 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise to thee of our own free will, but [this is what happened:] we were loaded with the [sinful] burdens of the [Egyptian] people's ornaments, and so we threw them [into the fire,] and likewise did this Samaritan cast [his into it]." 87 And he produced for them a calf: a body with a low. Then they Said: this is your god and the god of Musa, and that he forgat. 88 Why did they not see that it could not give them any response and had no power to harm or benefit them? 89
