The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
