We created mankind from clay, molded from mud, 26 and the jinn We had created before from flaming fire. 27 Your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to bring into being a man wrought from mud. 28 So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him. 29 So, the angels - all of them - fell down in prostration, 30 except Iblis who refused to join with the others in prostration. 31 He said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance? 32 He said: "It does not behove of me to prostrate myself before a human being whom You have created out of dry ringing clay wrought from black mud." 33 "Go hence, execrable," (said the Lord), "from this place, 34 "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." 35 He said, “My Lord! Grant me respite till the day when they will all be raised.” 36 Allah said: verily then thou art of the respited: 37 Till the Day of the Time known. 38 [Whereupon Iblis] said: "O my Sustainer! Since Thou hast thwarted me, I shall indeed make [all that is evil] on earth seem goodly to them, and shall most certainly beguile them - into grievous error 39 Except Thy servants from among them, the devoted ones. 40 Allah said: "Here is the path that leads straight to Me. 41 No power shall you have over (all) My creatures except those who fall into error and follow you, 42 being perverse; Gehenna shall be their promised land all together. 43 Seven gates it has, and unto each gate a set portion of them belongs.' 44
