The Human (Al-Insan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Has there not been over man a period of time, when he was nothing to be mentioned? 1 Verily, it is We who have created man out of a drop of sperm intermingled, so that We might try him [in his later life]: and therefore We made him a being endowed with hearing and sight. 2 Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but 4 The virtuous shall drink from a cup tempered with camphor water. 5 From a spring of which the votaries of God will drink and make it flow in abundance. 6 They fulfil their pledges, and fear a day the evil of which is widespread. 7 And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive,- 8 [saying, in their hearts,] "We feed you for the sake of God alone: we desire no recompense from you, nor thanks: 9 Surely we fear from our Lord a stern, distressful day. 10 God will certainly rescue them from the terror of that day and will meet them with joy and pleasure. 11 And shall recompense them for that which they patiently bare with a Garden and silken garment. 12 Reclining upon couches, they will find therein neither the heat of the sun nor bitter, biting cold, 13 Near them shall be its shades with its clusters hung gently down, 14 Passed round will be silver flagons and goblets made of glass, 15 crystal of silver that they have measured -- very exactly. 16 And they shall be made to drink therein a cup the admixture of which shall be ginger, 17 (Of) a fountain therein which is named Salsabil. 18 ۞ Immortal youths shall go about them; when thou seest them, thou supposest them scattered pearls, 19 And when you look towards it, you will see serenity and a great kingdom. 20 Upon the inhabitants will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink. 21 Verily this is for you by way of recompense, and your endeavour hath been accepted. 22
