The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
