The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
