Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariya. 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee! 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 to be my heir and to be the heir [of the blessings] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord, acceptable to you." 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" 8 He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. 11 [And when the son was born and grew up, he was told,] "O John! Hold fast unto the divine writ with [all thy] strength!" - for We granted him wisdom while he was yet a little boy, 12 and a tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was godfearing, 13 And kind to his parents, neither arrogant nor disobedient. 14 Peace be upon him on the day he was born and the day he dies, and on him the day when he is raised up alive. 15
