He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And he feareth 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 These verses are a reminder 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
