In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 surely the first part of the night is heavier in tread, more upright in speech, 6 Verily there is for thee by day occupation prolonged. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while. 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger. 15 Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Indeed this is nothing but a Good Counsel; so let him who will take a way leading to his Lord. 19
