The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise, and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 Pollution shun! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
