The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the inevitable event comes, 1 (and none denies its descending) 2 It will abase some and exalt others. 3 When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, 4 And the hills are ground to powder 5 and will scatter abroad into fine dust. 6 And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups). 7 Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) 8 And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 9 Then the foremost, how pre-excellent, 10 they who were [always] drawn close unto God! 11 in the Gardens of Delight, 12 a host of the ancients 13 And a few of the later peoples, 14 upon close-wrought couches 15 reclining on them facing each other; 16 immortal youths shall go about them 17 With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine, 18 by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk; 19 and with fruit of any kind that they may choose, 20 And the flesh of fowls that they desire. 21 And gorgeous eyed fair maidens. 22 like hidden pearls, 23 The reward for what they did. 24 There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination 25 except each other's greetings of, "Peace be with you". 26 As for those of the right hand -- how (happy) those of the right hand -- 27 They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns 28 And clusters of banana plants. 29 And a shade ever-spread. 30 And water gushing, 31 and an abundance of fruits, 32 Neither intercepted nor forbidden, 33 And carpets raised. 34 Indeed We formed them (the houris and all believing women), 35 And made them virgins, 36 Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, 37 For those of the right hand. 38
