Now, behold, this [divine writ] has indeed been bestowed from on high by the Sustainer of all the worlds: 192 The Faithful Spirit has descended with it, 193 Upon thy heart, that thou mayest be of the warners, 194 (a revelation) in clear Arabic language, 195 This is (indicated) in the Books of earlier people. 196 Is it not a sign unto them that the learned among the Children of Isra'il know it? 197 And if we had revealed it to any of the foreigners 198 and had he recited it unto them [in his own tongue,] they would not have believed in it. 199 Thus do We cause (unbelief) to enter the hearts of sinners. 200 They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment. 201 But when it comes upon them suddenly, taking them unawares, 202 They will therefore say, “Will we get some respite?” 203 Do they wish Us then to hasten the punishment? 204 Therefore observe, that if We give them some comforts for some years, – 205 and then Our torment will strike them, 206 That which they were made to enjoy shall not avail them? 207 Never have We destroyed a town without sending down messengers to warn it, 208 and reminded: for, never do We wrong [anyone]. 209 It was not the satans who brought it down: 210 it is not for them, nor are they able. 211 The satans are barred from listening to anything from the heavens. 212 So call not upon another god with Allah, lest you be of those who are punished. 213 And admonish thy nearest kinsmen, 214 and extend kindness and affection to those of the believers who follow you. 215 If they disobey you, say, "I bear no responsibility for what you do." 216 and place thy trust in the Almighty, the Dispenser of Grace, 217 who can see whether you stand up 218 and [sees] thy behaviour among those who prostrate themselves [before Him]: 219 He is all-hearing and all-knowing. 220 Shall I inform you, (O people!), on whom it is that the evil ones descend? 221 They descend on every forgerer steeped in sin, 222 They incline their ears, and most of them are liars. 223 As for the poets, the erring follow them, 224 hast thou not seen how they wander in every valley 225 and say things which they do not act upon, 226 Save those who believed and worked righteous works and remembered Allah much, and vindicated themselves after they had been wronged. And anon those who do wrong shall come to know with what a translating they shall be translated. 227
