a large throng from the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
