The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
