The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
