Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the daybreak, 1 and ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
