A multitude of those of old 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Verily we are undone. 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
