The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
