The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Have you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, 9 a worshiper when he prays. 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Did he not know that God sees? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 No, indeed; do not obey him! Prostrate and come nearer (to Allah). ۩ 19
